EL PROGRAMA ARROWSMITH

Esta metodología, basada en investigación neurocientífica, demuestra que es posible que los estudiantes refuercen sus debilitadas capacidades cognitivas para así superar sus graves disfunciones de aprendizaje, o de lenguaje, por ejemplo. Otra de las características y ventajas de este programa es que los logros conseguidos, gracias a la estimulación cognitiva, se mantienen a pesar del paso del tiempo.

Normalmente en ciencia los que descubren avances en el tratamiento de lesiones cerebrales son personas inteligentes con cerebros extraordinarios, que trabajan con personas cuyos cerebros están gravemente afectados. Barbara Arrowsmith-Young desempeñó ambos papeles. 

Y por el hecho de haber padecido esas dificultades continuó desarrollando numerosos ejercicios para abordar sus otros problemas de aprendizaje. Por ello, al final de este proceso se dio cuenta de que estaba lo suficientemente capacitada para abrir una escuela dedicada para tratar muchos de los principales trastornos de aprendizaje.

Actualmente esta metodología se implementa en colegios de todo el mundo, especialmente de Norte América, donde fue fundado, y tiene enorme éxito desde la Educación Infantil hasta la educación post secundaria; en definitiva, para cualquier alumno, sea cual sea su edad. 

LA HISTORIA DE BARBARA

Barbara Arrowsmith-Young nació con problemas de aprendizaje graves. A los 6 años le fue diagnosticado ‘bloqueo mental’, que en la actualidad se identificaría como ‘discapacidad múltiple del aprendizaje’. Sus  profesores confesaron a sus padres que nunca sería capaz de aprender como el resto de los niños. Cuando era pequeña leía y escribía todo al revés. Entendía el lenguaje sólo tras un gran esfuerzo y se perdía constantemente. No era capaz de seguir una conversación, ni de entender la hora, tampoco podía interpretar un chiste.

También presentaba disfunciones físicas. No encajaba en el espacio su parte izquierda del cuerpo, lo que la llevaba a hacerse daño con frecuencia, a chocarse contra las cosas, o a ser bastante torpe y a tener accidentes. 

A los 26 años, apoyándose en su excelente memoria, consiguió abrirse camino en la escuela de postgrado, donde conoció el trabajo de investigación del científico y neuropsicólogo ruso Aleksandr Luria, quien estudió sobre las lesiones traumáticas y el daño cerebral. 

Fue su trabajo la base en la que Arrowsmith-Young se inspiraría para crear los ejercicios cognitivos que lleva más de 30 años desempeñando con numerosos alumnos en la Escuela Arrowsmith de Toronto, y posteriormente en el Programa Arrowsmith.

Barbara Arrowsmith-Young es licenciada en Ciencias Aplicadas a Estudios de la infancia por la Universidad de Guelph (Canadá), y tiene un máster en Psicología de la Educación por la Universidad de Toronto (Ontario Institute for Studies in Education). Es miembro del International Advisory Board de la Institución Educativa SEK.

Como directora de la Escuela Arrowsmith y del Programa Arrowsmith continúa desarrollando nuevos planes para estudiantes con dificultades de aprendizaje. 

Pretende que todos los que luchan con los distintos trastornos de aprendizaje puedan beneficiarse de programas cognitivos basados en los principios de la neuroplasticidad, con un objetivo: transformar la capacidad que el cerebro tiene de aprender.
